Why Do French Kids Eat Everything?

Ever wondered how French kids eat everything?

It’s not magic—it’s about habits, mindset, and making food a positive experience. From a young age, they learn to appreciate flavours, try new dishes without hesitation, and see mealtime as more than just eating—it's a moment to enjoy and connect.

Here are six ways I have encouraged my kids to be open to all kinds of food:

Note: My children are now 14 and 12 so these are true and tried tips that I'm sharing with you today.

1. Make meals a moment –
We eat together with the tv off, with no pressure and we chat about our day. A relaxed atmosphere makes trying new foods easier!

2. Teach balance, not restriction – The candy jar and any sweets are visible, and they know it won’t disappear overnight. No urgency to overindulge! This helps them develop natural moderation.

3. Start early – Even baby purees got a pinch of herbs and spices in my house (I used to put nutmeg in purees). It helps develop adventurous taste buds!

4. Show them where food comes from – I know it sounds cliché but it it so true! Whether it’s a backyard garden (this is an old post but still true) or a pick-your-own farm trip, hands-on experience builds appreciation for fresh ingredients.

5. Involve them in the kitchen – From cracking eggs to guessing ingredients in soups, making food fun means they’re more likely to eat it! I know it is not always easy to allow them to make a mess in the kitchen, I'm still working on that one!

6. Eat for pleasure – Meals should be joyful. Savour every bite, and appreciate the love that went into making it. Cooking and baking are a lot of French people love language, taste the love!

BONUS

  • We eat with our eyes and so do kids, make their plates colourful!
  • Don't make it complicated, life as parents is busy enough, you don't need more pressure!

Special ingredient of this recipe: a break! Moi aussi... It’s Thursday, I’m tired, and there’s another dinner to prepare. And as I write this? Frozen pizzas are in the oven.
